Ultrasound

The Rachel Forster Breast Clinic provides a full range of services from high-risk screening to symptomatic assessment and management. These are free public hospital outpatient clinics requiring a generic referral. Through its breast surgeons, breast physicians and radiologists, the Breast Clinic also works closely with Central & Eastern BreastScreen.

The Breast Clinics at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital provide state-of-the-art radiological and diagnostic services for mammograms, ultrasounds and specialised tests such as stereotactic mammotome biopsy, fine needle biopsy, core biopsy, breast MRI and pre-operative hookwire localisation on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Approximately 85% of new patients are referred to the Breast Clinic for the investigation and management of benign, non-cancerous breast lumps. With onsite diagnotic facilities, patients can be quickly reassured. If necessary, patients can be placed in the high-risk group for close surveillance.

Patients who have symptomatic breast cancer are referred to the clinic by their general practitioner. Through the availability of special diagnostic techniques, we are able to provide a "one-stop shop" to investigate and manage these patients.

A number of asymptomatic patients have their cancers detected by routine mammography, usually through the BreastScreen NSW Program. We work closely with the BreastScreen Program in the assessment and management of these patients.

We highly recommend that all women over the age of 40 have regular 2nd yearly mammographic screening for breast cancer. Patient with early detected breast cancer have a survival rate of over 85%.

The Rachel Forster Breast Clinic sees approximately of 4,480 patients each year and treats an average of 200 new breast cancers each year.
